By Allen Hopgood
It's a journey that becomes effortless when you're not side-tracked by distractions." This statement piqued my interest. "Distracted?" I pondered what he meant by that.
Intrigued, I asked, "By what exactly?"
He looked at me, his eyes reflecting the wisdom of years of experience, and simply said, "By everything else."
In today's guitar instruction world, you'll find an overwhelming amount of material on how to play the guitar. But let's be honest, most of it is more entertainment than educational. "There's plenty of fun stuff out there, but true wisdom? That's rare," my teacher noted.
You might hop from one tutorial video or book to another, mistaking this for learning. But if you want to excel at guitar, what you need is not just information, but wisdom. All those "How To Play Guitar", "Play Better Guitar", "Master Guitar in a Week" resources, including YouTube videos, books, and DVDs, are just... stuff. They're lacking in substance.
I'm not saying these resources are useless. They just don't offer much depth, at least not for you, not right now.
Until you've fully grasped and internalised everything you're learning in your lessons, and you've:
• Internalised it
• Memorised it
• Applied it to other musical concepts
• Played it fluently to the point where you can't get it wrong
• Integrated it with all your other knowledge and skills
...diving into all that other material is merely a form of entertainment. It's temporary and doesn't truly enhance your skills or knowledge. You may feel like you're learning something new and exciting, but in reality, you're just skimming the surface, like a curious kitten chasing the next shiny object.
To become a proficient guitar player, what you really need is wisdom and fluency. This means consistently applying and integrating a set of principles into your practice. That's the foundation of guitar mastery. Remember, no professional guitarist got to where they are by solely watching YouTube videos. They didn't achieve their skill by endlessly consuming content. It just doesn't work like that.
Becoming a good, or even great, guitar player starts with mastering small bits of information. You internalise, master, and build consistency until you achieve fluency. Then, you apply and integrate. That's the key to greatness.
How do I know this? Well, I'm certainly no guitar deity. I wasn't born a prodigy, but I can play. And I got here by focusing on small, manageable pieces of information, dedicating time and effort to them.
I achieved this not by chasing after the latest trends or endlessly watching videos. I firmly believe you can achieve the same. Remember, this isn't rocket science. Yet, there are plenty of distractions out there that can veer you off your path to reaching your true potential. As your teacher, I urge you to follow these steps: internalise, memorise, apply, and work at it until it becomes fluent. Then, integrate it with your other skills.
One final tip:
All of this is futile if you don't practice slowly. Practicing slowly is a fundamental principle of guitar mastery. When you diligently follow these steps – internalising, memorising, applying, integrating, achieving fluency, and practicing slowly – it transforms from mere stuff into wisdom. Once you've mastered this and made it your own, only then will you be able to discern whether to chase after that shiny object for more wisdom or entertainment.
